Pillar/SOTA expertises/State of the art

Technical expertisesSOTA envelopespecialties.

Some envelope projects demand a specialist facade engineering practice that sits well beyond the standard scope of a general engineering office, because they touch extreme resilience, active skins, envelope mechatronics, structural glass at the limits, high-performance materials, energy-generating facades, the systemic reading of an existing building asset, forensic investigation, or Swiss regulatory compliance. These situations cannot be handled opportunistically. They demand vertical practices sustained continuously. This page gathers the twelve SOTA specialties our atelier-laboratory carries inside the Envelope Engineering pole, organised across six cohesive families. Each one is mobilised as a vertical when a project requires it, never pushed by default. All of them are maintained by our applied research practice: test protocols, detail libraries, normative monitoring, dedicated industrial partnerships.

Our technical specialties.

The twelve specialties our atelier maintains in continuous practice organise across six families. The shared challenge is to avoid the trap of imported specialty that does not integrate with the other lots.

Six families of SOTA specialties

Resilience and security: blast-resistant glazing (bomb blast), anti-intrusion RC4 to RC6, impact. Active skin and mechatronics: smart skin / electrochromic glass, complex motorised envelope systems (revolving doors, kinetic facades, motorised solar shading, BMS-driven ventilation openings). Materials and structures: structural glass and jumbo glazing, high-performance envelope materials (timber cladding, weathering steel, UHPC, GFRP, terracotta, ceramic, ETFE/PTFE textile structures). Energy and carbon: BIPV (energy-generating envelope), circular economy, urban mining. Diagnostics and forensics: reading an existing envelope asset as a system, judicial expert witness and facade pathology. Regulatory compliance: MoPEC, CECB, Minergie, SIA Swiss normative frameworks for energy compliance of the envelope. The role of the Envelope Engineering pole is to carry that integration. SOTA expertises are not silos: they enrich the systemic mastery we bring on a project, they do not replace it.

When to mobilise which expertise

Project typology guides the mobilisation. A few typical configurations: signature tertiary tower in Switzerland or Europe: structural glass, BIPV for energy performance, smart skin on selected oriented facades, systemic diagnostic on the global performance. UHNWI or diplomatic headquarters: blast-resistant glazing and anti-intrusion RC4-RC6 as a layer integrated into the architectural design, without aesthetic compromise. Museum, cultural institution, embassy: structural glass for the architectural signature, anti-intrusion per programme, smart skin for daylight modulation, structural membranes for atria. Full retrofit of a tertiary asset: systemic diagnostic upstream, BIPV as a renovated layer, circular economy for the disassembly and reuse of recoverable components. International mega-project: multi-vertical orchestration via our Design-Build Lead, with simultaneous mobilisation of several specialties per programme.

§ Beyond the catalogue
The catalogue does not say who mobilises what. Four dominant profiles activate these verticals on different projects.
For whom

Who mobilises the SOTA expertises.

04 profiles
02Plate 02 / 09, Resilience

Resilience and security.

Projects exposed to extreme resilience risks (sensitive corporate headquarters, embassies, institutions, UHNWI heritage assets, strategic public buildings) demand an envelope engineering conceived from the sketch phase, not added as a late layer. Two specialties dominate this territory.

01 / 02Blast

Blast engineering

Sizing of the envelope (glazing, assemblies, anchorages, secondary structure) under explosion loading.

Applicable references: UFC 4-010-01 (US Department of Defense, widely adopted in diplomatic and Gulf), NFPA 285, EN standards for Europe, SAFE protocols for the United Kingdom. The design integrates multi-ply laminated glass, effort-retention assemblies, ductile anchorages, and post-fracture behaviour modelling.

02 / 02RC4-RC6

Anti-intrusion RC4 to RC6

Sizing under sustained forced-entry attempts per EN 1627.

Classes RC4 (10 minutes with electric tools), RC5 and RC6 (professional saws and grinders). High-security laminated glass (P6B to P8B per EN 356), reinforced profiles, anti-pull-out anchorages, integration with detection systems.

Frequent combination

These two specialties often combine on the same project. The atelier's challenge is to integrate them into the architectural signature: resilience requirements must not degrade the designer's intent, they must dissolve into the geometry and materiality.

03Plate 03 / 09, Active skin & mechatronics

Active skin and envelope mechatronics.

When the envelope ceases to be a static object and becomes a dynamic component of the building, two territories coexist: optical modulation (active glazing) and mechatronics (complex motorised envelope systems). Both share the same discipline: BMS integration and operational piloting.

Two complementary territories

Active glazing and embedded sensors: electrochromic (SageGlass, View, Halio, Merck), PDLC (switching transparent/opaque), embedded sensors (temperature, humidity, differential pressure, indoor air quality, tightness incidents). The envelope becomes a measurement organ feeding the BMS for active heritage operations. Envelope mechatronics: signature revolving doors, secured diplomatic vestibules, kinetic institutional facades, motorised solar shading, skylights and ventilation openings driven by BMS. References EN 16005, EN 12453, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Piloting via BACnet/KNX/Modbus, BMS/SCADA integration, remote monitoring.

01 / 02Smart skin

Smart Skin & electrochromic glass

Dynamic facade with BMS piloting, BACnet/KNX integration.

The smart skin business case is built carefully: the CAPEX uplift on the glazed layer is real, but it arbitrates against OPEX savings, occupant comfort, heritage value at resale or lease, and certification compliance (LEED, WELL, Minergie-Eco).

Materials and structures.

When architecture demands transparencies without visible frames, glazed units beyond European standard sizes, or a palette of high-performance envelope materials (timber cladding, weathering steel, UHPC, GFRP, terracotta, ceramic, ETFE/PTFE textile structures), engineering must hold under particular conditions, often at the edge of what the industrial sector can produce today.

05Plate 05 / 09, Energy & carbon

Energy and carbon.

The envelope is gradually becoming an energy lever and a carbon lever, not a cost centre to neutralise. Two specialties structure this territory.

01 / 02BIPV

BIPV, energy-generating envelope

Building-integrated photovoltaics turn envelope surfaces into energy-producing organs.

The engineering covers thermal sizing (modules heat up and degrade yield), architectural integration (custom modules, finishes, monochromy, visual restraint), electrical interfaces (inverters, storage, BMS connection) and the business case. The latter is central: CAPEX uplift arbitrated against annual production, guarantees of origin, OPEX savings on self-consumed electricity, and ESG asset valuation.

02 / 02Circular

Circular economy & urban mining

The envelope is designed to be disassembled, sorted and reused, not merely recycled at end of life.

Design for disassembly (DfD) principles impose mechanical rather than bonded assemblies, standardised components to facilitate redistribution, and material passports documenting composition and traceability. Urban mining complements the approach with systematic valuation of removed elements (facades, joinery, glazing) on retrofit and deconstruction projects. The practice meets the requirements of certifications (BREEAM, LEED Platinum, Cradle to Cradle) and translates favourably into asset valuation.

06Plate 06 / 09, Diagnostics & forensics

Diagnostics and forensics.

Reading an existing envelope as a system is the upstream side. Investigating a loss event or a contradictory facade dispute is the downstream side. Two twin specialties, same measurement and reading tools, different contractual finalities. Targets: institutional owner or investor in pre-decision, insurers and lawyers in litigation phase.

Scope of the two missions

Systemic diagnostic covers: measured thermal performance and air-tightness (infrared thermography, air-tightness test, in-situ U-value spot readings); active pathologies (infiltrations, condensations, debonding, anchorage defects, corrosion); current and forthcoming regulatory compliance (MoPEC, CECB, French décret tertiaire, EU taxonomy); valuation potential; contractual reading. Auditable deliverable usable by third parties (acquirers, insurers, certifiers, banks). Forensic expertise and facade pathology covers: forensic analysis of loss events and disorders, judicial expert witness assignments, dires in contradictory, amicable and insurance expertises, support to construction-law specialised lawyers. Methodology shared with the systemic diagnostic, contentious finality.

01 / 02Diagnostic

Systemic diagnostic

Reading an existing envelope asset as a coherent system, not as a list of defects.

Frequent entry door to Owner's Engineer or Lead Envelope Consultant. Six dimensions in parallel: geometry, physics, carbon, economics, risks, recommendations. The deliverable is a structured and auditable report, usable by third parties (potential acquirers, insurers, certifiers, banks). It allows the owner to decide on a factual basis (preservation, phased retrofit, full retrofit, even divestment) rather than on contradictory estimates from stakeholders.

Mission often activated downstream of a loss event, a disorder or a technical dispute. Forensic method shared with the systemic diagnostic: in-situ measurements, contractual reading, pathological analysis, auditable restitution. Contentious finality: support to construction-law specialised lawyers, dires in contradictory before tribunal, inter-party amicable expertise, dommages-ouvrage insurance expertises.

07Plate 07 / 09, Compliance

Swiss regulatory compliance.

Swiss normative frameworks (MoPEC, CECB, Minergie, SIA) now structure the energy compliance of any envelope project in Switzerland, new build or retrofit. Compliance is not a by-product of the diagnostic: it is a distinct discipline activated at investor pre-decision, in pre-construction, and in active heritage operations.

The mode depends on the scope

The choice of mode depends on the mandate's scope, not on the specialty. A single specialty can be mobilised under an Owner's Engineer on one project and under a Lead Envelope Consultant on another. What remains constant is the methodological rigour and the trusted-third-party posture.
